Overview
Zinc is a mineral the body needs for growth, healing and a healthy immune system. A lack of it is common in children in India with poor diets and repeated infections, and it can slow growth and make illnesses like diarrhea longer and more severe. This is why zinc is given alongside ORS for childhood diarrhea. The deficiency is easily corrected with zinc-rich foods and supplements once it is recognised.
Symptoms
- Poor growth and delayed development in children
- Frequent infections and slow wound healing
- Longer and more severe bouts of diarrhea
- Loss of appetite and altered taste
- Hair thinning and skin rashes in severe cases
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if a child grows poorly, has frequent infections or repeated diarrhea, so zinc and nutrition can be assessed.
Causes
A diet low in zinc-rich foods, repeated diarrhea, poor absorption, and increased needs during growth, pregnancy and illness.
