Overview
Zika is a mosquito-borne viral infection spread by the same daytime-biting Aedes mosquitoes that carry dengue. In most people it causes only a mild illness with fever, rash and joint pain, or no symptoms at all. Its main danger is in pregnancy, where it can harm the developing baby's brain. Because of this, pregnant women in areas with Zika are advised to take special care to avoid mosquito bites.
Symptoms
- Mild fever

- Joint pain, especially in the hands and feet
- Red, sore eyes (conjunctivitis)
- Headache and muscle ache

Causes
The Zika virus, spread mainly by Aedes mosquito bites; it can also pass from a pregnant woman to her baby and, less often, through sexual contact.
