Overview
A vaginal yeast infection is a very common overgrowth of Candida yeast that causes intense itching, irritation and a thick white discharge. It is not a sexually transmitted infection and does not mean poor hygiene — it often follows antibiotics, pregnancy, diabetes or hot humid weather. It clears quickly with antifungal creams or tablets. Infections that keep coming back should be checked, as they can point to an underlying cause like diabetes.
Symptoms
- Intense itching and irritation around the vagina
- A thick, white, curd-like discharge
- Redness and swelling of the surrounding skin
- Burning during urination or intercourse
- Soreness of the area

See a doctor if it is your first infection, symptoms are severe, infections keep returning, or you are pregnant.
Causes
Overgrowth of Candida yeast, encouraged by antibiotics, pregnancy, diabetes, tight or damp clothing and a weakened immune system.
