Overview
Viral fever is a general term for the fevers caused by common viruses, especially during the changing seasons and monsoon in India. It brings a raised temperature with body ache, weakness and cold-like symptoms, and usually settles on its own in three to five days with rest, fluids and paracetamol. The main job is to stay hydrated, rest, and watch for warning signs that point to a more serious infection like dengue or typhoid.
Symptoms
- Fever with chills and sweating
- Body aches and weakness
- Headache and tiredness
- Sore throat, runny nose or cough
- Loss of appetite
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if fever lasts more than three days, is very high, or comes with warning signs — high fever in the dengue season should be checked.
Emergency — call 108 or go to the nearest hospital
- Difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting, bleeding, severe stomach pain, a rash, or drowsiness and confusion — seek care urgently
Causes
A wide range of common viruses spread through coughs, sneezes and contaminated hands, more common when the weather changes.
