Overview
Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that bulge under the skin, usually on the legs, when the tiny valves inside them weaken and blood pools instead of flowing back to the heart. They are common in people who stand for long hours and in pregnancy. Many cause only aching and cosmetic concern, but severe cases can lead to skin changes and ulcers, which is when treatment becomes important.
Symptoms
- Bulging, rope-like blue or purple veins on the legs
- Aching, heaviness or throbbing in the legs
- Swelling around the ankles by the end of the day
- Itching over the affected veins
- Skin darkening or ulcers near the ankle in severe cases
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if veins are painful, the skin around them changes colour or breaks down, or if a vein bleeds.
Causes
Weak vein valves, worsened by long standing, ageing, being overweight, pregnancy and family history.
