Overview
Stomach cancer develops slowly in the lining of the stomach and often causes only vague indigestion-like symptoms early on, so it is easy to dismiss. This is why long-standing indigestion, especially in someone over 50 or with a family history, deserves a proper check rather than years of over-the-counter antacids. Caught early it can be treated far more successfully, and reducing risk factors like a stomach bug and preserved, salty foods helps prevent it.
Symptoms
- Persistent indigestion or burning that does not settle
- Feeling full quickly after small meals
- Loss of appetite and unexplained weight loss
- Nausea, vomiting, or vomiting blood
- Black, tarry stools and tiredness from anaemia
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for indigestion that persists or is new after age 50, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, or any sign of stomach bleeding.
Causes
Long-term Helicobacter pylori infection, a diet high in salty, smoked and preserved foods, smoking, and family history.
