Overview
Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain, caused by inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the sole of the foot. The classic sign is sharp heel pain with the first steps in the morning that eases as you walk, then returns after standing for long. It is common in people who stand a lot, are overweight, or wear unsupportive footwear. It usually settles over months with stretches, supportive footwear and rest.
Symptoms
- Sharp heel pain with the first steps in the morning
- Pain that eases after walking a little, then returns
- Heel pain after long standing or on getting up from rest
- Tenderness under the heel
- Discomfort worse in flat, unsupportive footwear
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if heel pain lasts more than a few weeks, is severe, or does not improve with stretching and supportive footwear.
Causes
Overloading and small tears of the plantar fascia, linked to long standing, being overweight, tight calf muscles and poor footwear.
