Overview
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition in women of reproductive age. The ovaries produce more male-type hormones than usual, which disturbs ovulation. It shows up as irregular periods, acne, excess facial hair, weight gain and sometimes difficulty conceiving. PCOS is managed well with weight control, exercise and medicines tailored to whether periods, skin or fertility are the main concern.
Symptoms
- Irregular, delayed or missed periods
- Excess hair growth on the face or body
- Acne and oily skin
- Weight gain, especially around the waist
- Thinning of scalp hair
- Difficulty becoming pregnant
When to see a doctor
See a gynecologist if periods are consistently irregular, if excess hair or acne is worsening, or if you have been trying to conceive without success.
Causes
The exact cause is unclear; insulin resistance, family history and excess weight all play a role and reinforce each other.
