Overview
An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac that forms on or in an ovary. Most are harmless, form as a normal part of the monthly cycle, and disappear on their own within a few months without treatment. Many cause no symptoms and are found by chance on a scan. Larger cysts can cause pelvic pain, bloating or period changes. Occasionally a cyst twists or bursts, causing sudden severe pain that needs urgent care, so new severe pelvic pain should be taken seriously.
Symptoms
- Often no symptoms
- Dull ache or pressure in the lower belly or pelvis
- Bloating or a feeling of fullness
- Pain during intercourse
- Irregular periods in some cases
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for ongoing pelvic pain or bloating, and urgently for sudden severe pelvic pain with vomiting or faintness.
Emergency — call 108 or go to the nearest hospital
- Sudden severe pelvic or belly pain with vomiting, fever or faintness — a cyst may have twisted or burst, seek care immediately
Causes
Most form as a normal part of ovulation (functional cysts); others are unrelated to the cycle, and a few are linked to conditions like endometriosis.
