Overview
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, caused by the gradual wearing away of the smooth cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in a joint. It usually affects the knees, hips, hands and spine, bringing pain and stiffness that build up over years. It cannot be reversed, but weight control, the right exercises, pain relief and, in severe cases, joint replacement can keep people active and comfortable.
Symptoms
- Joint pain that worsens with activity and eases with rest
- Stiffness, especially after resting or in the morning
- Reduced movement in the affected joint
- A grating or crackling feeling on moving the joint
- Swelling and bony knobs around the joint
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if joint pain and stiffness limit your daily activities or do not settle with rest and simple painkillers.
Causes
Age-related cartilage wear, made worse by being overweight, previous joint injury, heavy repeated use and family history.
