Overview
Oral submucous fibrosis is a long-term condition, very common in India, in which the lining of the mouth becomes stiff and scarred, mainly from chewing areca nut, gutka and paan masala. It causes a burning mouth and a gradually reducing ability to open the mouth. Importantly, it is a pre-cancerous condition — it can turn into oral cancer over time. Stopping the habit early and getting treatment can halt its progress, so it must never be ignored.
Symptoms
- A burning feeling in the mouth, worse with spicy food
- Gradually reduced ability to open the mouth
- Stiffness and blanching (paleness) of the inner cheeks
- Loss of taste and a leathery feel to the mouth lining
- Difficulty eating, speaking or maintaining oral hygiene
When to see a doctor
See a doctor or dentist if your mouth burns or opens less than before, and stop chewing tobacco and areca nut — this can prevent mouth cancer.
Causes
Chewing areca nut, gutka, paan and paan masala; the fibres and chemicals scar the lining of the mouth over time.
