Overview
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that mainly affects children, causing fever, cough, red eyes and a spreading rash. It spreads very easily through the air, and though most children recover, it can lead to serious complications like pneumonia and brain inflammation, especially in the malnourished. It is entirely preventable by vaccination, which is why keeping children's immunisations up to date is so important.
Symptoms
- High fever
- Runny nose, cough and red, watery eyes
- Tiny white spots inside the mouth
- A red blotchy rash starting on the face and spreading down
- Tiredness and loss of appetite
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for suspected measles, and urgently for breathing difficulty, drowsiness, fits or a very high fever.
Emergency — call 108 or go to the nearest hospital
- Difficulty breathing, drowsiness or confusion, fits, or a high fever that will not settle — seek care immediately
Causes
The measles virus, spread through coughs and sneezes. Unvaccinated children are at greatest risk.
