Overview
A lipoma is a soft, harmless lump of fatty tissue that grows slowly just under the skin, often on the shoulders, back, neck or arms. It is one of the most common non-cancerous growths and is usually painless and movable under the fingers. Most lipomas need no treatment; they are only removed if they grow large, become uncomfortable, or the diagnosis needs to be confirmed.

- A soft, doughy lump under the skin
- A lump that moves easily when pressed
- Slow growth over months or years

- Most often on the neck, shoulders, back, arms or thighs

See a doctor to confirm a new lump is a lipoma, and if it grows quickly, becomes painful, or feels hard or fixed.
Causes
The exact cause is unknown; lipomas tend to run in families and can appear at any age, most often in middle age.
