Overview
A keloid is a thick, raised scar that grows beyond the edges of the original wound as the skin over-heals. It can follow even minor injuries, acne, ear-piercing or surgery, and is more common in people with brown and darker skin, making it frequently seen in India. Keloids are harmless but can itch, feel tender, and cause distress by their size and appearance. They are stubborn to treat, but injections, silicone dressings and other measures can flatten and soften them.
Symptoms
- A raised, firm, shiny scar that extends beyond the wound
- A scar that keeps growing over months
- Itching or tenderness over the scar
- A pink, red, brown or darker colour
- Common on the chest, shoulders, earlobes and jaw
When to see a doctor
See a skin doctor for a scar that grows, itches or bothers you; early treatment works better, and those prone to keloids should avoid unnecessary piercings.
Causes
An over-active healing response with excess collagen, triggered by injury, surgery, acne or piercings; a strong genetic and skin-type tendency.
