Overview
Indigestion is discomfort in the upper belly that comes on during or after eating, with a feeling of fullness, bloating or burning. It is very common and usually linked to eating too fast, too much, or too much oily and spicy food. Occasional indigestion is harmless, but frequent or severe symptoms can point to an ulcer, acid reflux or other conditions that deserve a check-up.
Symptoms
- Fullness or heaviness in the upper belly during or after meals
- Burning discomfort below the breastbone
- Bloating and frequent belching
- Nausea
- Discomfort worse with spicy, oily or heavy meals
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if indigestion is frequent, severe, comes with weight loss or vomiting, or does not settle with simple measures.
Emergency — call 108 or go to the nearest hospital
- Chest pressure spreading to the arm, jaw or back with sweating or breathlessness — this can be a heart attack, not indigestion, call 108
Causes
Overeating, eating too quickly, spicy or fatty food, caffeine, alcohol, smoking and stress. Sometimes an ulcer, reflux or gallbladder problem underlies it.
