Overview
Impetigo is a contagious skin infection that is very common in children, causing red sores that quickly burst and form a honey-coloured crust, usually around the nose and mouth. It spreads easily through touch and shared items. It is not serious and clears well with antibiotic creams or, when widespread, oral antibiotics, but children should stay away from school until the sores heal or treatment has started.
Symptoms
- Red sores that quickly rupture
- Golden or honey-coloured crusts over the sores
- Itching around the affected skin
- Sores mostly around the nose, mouth, hands or nappy area
- Spread to nearby skin from scratching
When to see a doctor
See a doctor to start antibiotic treatment, especially if sores are spreading or the child has a fever.
Causes
Staph or strep bacteria entering through minor cuts, insect bites or existing rashes. Warm humid weather and crowded conditions help it spread.
