Overview
A goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland at the front of the neck, seen as a visible swelling. In many parts of India it is linked to a lack of iodine in the diet, which is why iodised salt was introduced. A goiter may occur with normal, high or low thyroid activity. Treatment depends on the cause and on whether the swelling is affecting breathing or swallowing.
Symptoms
- A visible swelling at the base of the front of the neck
- A tight feeling in the throat
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing if large
- Hoarseness or cough
- Symptoms of an over- or under-active thyroid in some people

See a doctor for any lasting neck swelling, especially with difficulty swallowing, breathing or a change in voice.
Causes
Iodine deficiency, autoimmune thyroid disease, nodules, and inflammation of the gland.
