Overview
Glandular fever is a viral infection, common in teenagers and young adults, that causes a lasting sore throat, swollen glands and marked tiredness. It spreads mainly through saliva, which is why it is nicknamed the kissing disease. There is no specific cure — it clears on its own over a few weeks with rest and fluids — but the tiredness can linger for a while. Because the spleen can swell, avoiding heavy contact sport during recovery is important.
Symptoms
- A severe, lasting sore throat
- Swollen glands in the neck and armpits
- High fever
- Extreme tiredness that can last weeks
- Swollen tonsils and, at times, a swollen spleen
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for a severe lasting sore throat with swollen glands and tiredness, and urgently for severe belly pain or difficulty breathing or swallowing.
Emergency — call 108 or go to the nearest hospital
- Sudden severe pain in the upper left belly (a possible spleen problem), or difficulty breathing or swallowing — seek care immediately
Causes
Usually the Epstein-Barr virus, spread through saliva by kissing, sharing drinks and utensils, and coughs and sneezes.
