Overview
A fungal nail infection makes a nail thickened, discoloured and brittle, most often affecting the toenails. It is common, especially in the warm, humid Indian climate and in people who sweat a lot or have athlete's foot. It is not dangerous but can be unsightly and, over time, uncomfortable. It is slow to clear because nails grow slowly, so treatment with antifungal medicines needs patience over several months.
Symptoms
- Thickened, brittle or crumbly nails
- White, yellow or brown discolouration of the nail
- Nails lifting away from the nail bed
- A slightly foul smell
- Spread from one nail to others
When to see a doctor
See a skin doctor if nails are discoloured and thickened, especially if you have diabetes or the infection is spreading.
Causes
Fungi that thrive in warm, damp conditions, spread from athlete's foot, shared footwear, and walking barefoot in damp public areas.
