Overview
Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition that causes widespread pain and tenderness all over the body, along with deep tiredness, poor sleep and difficulty concentrating. It is thought to arise from the way the brain and nerves process pain signals, turning up the sensation of pain. Tests are usually normal, which can make people feel unheard. It is real and manageable — a combination of gentle graded exercise, better sleep, stress management and, when needed, medicines helps most people.
Symptoms
- Widespread, persistent aching pain all over the body
- Tenderness to touch in many areas
- Deep tiredness even after sleep
- Poor, unrefreshing sleep
- Difficulty concentrating and low mood
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for widespread body pain with tiredness and poor sleep so other causes can be excluded and a management plan started.
Causes
Altered pain processing in the nervous system; often triggered or worsened by stress, poor sleep, illness or physical or emotional trauma.
