Overview
Fatty liver disease is a build-up of extra fat in the liver, increasingly common in India alongside rising diabetes and obesity. In its early stage it usually causes no symptoms and is often found by chance on a scan or blood test. Left unchecked over years it can inflame and scar the liver. The good news is that it can often be reversed in its early stages through weight loss, a healthier diet and more activity.
Symptoms
- Usually no symptoms in the early stages
- Vague tiredness or a dull ache in the upper right belly
- Often found by chance on an ultrasound or blood test
- In advanced disease, yellow skin, swelling or easy bruising
- Associated weight gain, diabetes or high cholesterol
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if a scan shows a fatty liver, or if you have diabetes, obesity or high cholesterol, so liver health can be checked.
Causes
Excess fat in the liver linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and, separately, heavy alcohol use.
