Overview
Dry eye disease is a common condition in which the eyes do not make enough tears, or the tears evaporate too fast, leaving the surface dry and irritated. It is increasingly common with long screen use, air conditioning, dust and pollution, and with age. It causes a gritty, burning feeling and, oddly, sometimes watery eyes. Most cases are managed comfortably with lubricating drops, screen breaks and simple measures to protect the eye surface.
Symptoms
- A gritty, sandy or burning feeling in the eyes
- Redness and irritation
- Blurred vision that clears on blinking
- Tired eyes and discomfort with screens
- Watery eyes at times, as a reflex to dryness
When to see a doctor
See an eye doctor if dryness is constant, affects vision, or does not improve with lubricating drops and screen breaks.
Causes
Reduced or poor-quality tears from ageing, long screen use, air conditioning, dust, pollution, contact lenses and some medicines.
