Overview
Dandruff is a common, harmless scalp condition that causes white or greyish flakes of dead skin and, often, an itchy scalp. It is linked to a yeast that lives on the skin, oily skin, and dryness. While not serious or contagious, it can be embarrassing and persistent. Most cases are controlled with regular use of the right medicated shampoos, though it tends to come and go over time.
Symptoms
- White or grey flakes in the hair and on the shoulders
- An itchy scalp
- A dry or, at times, oily scaly scalp
- Flaking that worsens in cold, dry weather or with stress
- Sometimes redness of the scalp
When to see a doctor
See a skin doctor if dandruff does not improve with medicated shampoos, or if the scalp is very red, sore or losing hair.
Causes
Overgrowth of a normal skin yeast, oily skin, sensitivity to hair products, and dry skin. Stress and cold weather can worsen it.
