Overview
Conjunctivitis, often called eye flu, is inflammation of the thin membrane covering the white of the eye, causing redness, watering and discomfort. It is very common and spreads quickly in families and schools, especially during the monsoon. Most cases are viral and clear on their own within a week or two; bacterial and allergic types are also common. Good hand hygiene is the key to stopping it spreading.
Symptoms
- Redness in one or both eyes
- Watering and a gritty feeling
- Sticky discharge that may crust the lashes
- Itching, especially in allergic types
- Mild sensitivity to light
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if there is severe pain, marked light sensitivity, blurred vision, or symptoms that do not improve in a week.
Emergency — call 108 or go to the nearest hospital
- Severe eye pain, loss of vision, or intense light sensitivity — go to an eye doctor urgently
Causes
Viruses (most common), bacteria, or allergies. Viral and bacterial types spread easily through touch and shared towels.
