Overview
Allergic rhinitis is an allergic reaction in the nose to things like dust, pollen, mould or pet dander. It causes sneezing, a runny or blocked nose and itchy, watery eyes, and can be seasonal or year-round. Though not dangerous, it can seriously disturb sleep, concentration and daily comfort, and worsen asthma. Avoiding triggers, along with antihistamines and steroid nasal sprays, controls it well for most people.
Symptoms
- Repeated sneezing, often in bursts
- Runny or blocked nose
- Itchy nose, eyes, throat or roof of the mouth
- Watery, red eyes
- Postnasal drip and tiredness
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if symptoms are troublesome, disturb sleep, do not settle with simple measures, or worsen asthma.
Causes
An allergic reaction to airborne triggers such as house dust mites, pollen, mould spores and animal dander.
