Overview
Acne is a very common skin condition in which oil and dead skin cells block the hair follicles, leading to pimples, blackheads and, in some, deeper painful lumps. It is most common in the teenage years but can continue into adulthood, and it often appears on the face, chest and back. Beyond the skin, acne can affect confidence. A range of effective treatments can control it and, importantly, prevent scarring.
Symptoms
- Whiteheads and blackheads
- Red, tender pimples
- Painful lumps under the skin in severe cases
- Oily skin
- Scars or dark marks after spots heal
When to see a doctor
See a skin doctor if acne is severe, painful, leaving scars or dark marks, or not improving with over-the-counter products.
Causes
Excess oil, blocked follicles, acne bacteria and hormonal changes. Stress, some cosmetics and certain medicines can worsen it.
